FLAVIA Rebellious Wines

Flavia and Giacomo Rallo are the brother-sister duo and fourth generation winemakers behind "Flavia Rebellious Wines." Their family has owned and made wine on the property since 1860, Situated 750-900 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Etna. Some slopes of the land exceed 30% and are so steep that mechanines are impossible to use. The vineyards grow on the northern edge of the Etna DOC, mere miles away from the wine world's favorite active volcano. The sandy textured lava soil and temperate Mediterranean climate produce aromatic and fresh grapes. Uniquely, Flavia almost exclusively bottles in liter format, and often crown-cap their still wines, making these bottles an absolute joy to crack open.

ETNA WINES
THE FRUIT OF HEROIC VITICULTURE
From fields as dark as pitch and as fiery as the flames of the Apocalypse, our Rebel Wines of Etna are born.

We are on the northern side of the Etna DOC, between the Zottorinoto and Puntalepalino districts, precisely in Solicchiata in the hamlet of Castiglione di Sicilia, at an altitude of 750-900 meters above sea level

An absolutely unique area, an active volcano with an incredible mosaic of soils due to the various lava flows of eruptions, in which every meter of land is different from the other, giving typicality and diversity of flavours, colors and smells and, collecting all the scents of the sea on the slopes of Etna.

The composition of the sandy textured lava soil is characterized by a wealth of minerals. The climate is generally temperate Mediterranean, with maximum rainfall in the autumn-winter period and minimum in the summer period which contribute to producing healthy grapes; the months of June and July are usually dry while August is quite rainy. The strong temperature variations in the months of August and September favor the production of grapes with great aromatic freshness and a unique personality.

WINES FROM THE STAGNONE RESERVE
AND THE ANCIENT MARSALA SALT PANS
From the soils of marine origin and the dominant power of the Mistral, our Ribelli di Marsala wines are born.

These vineyards are located on the northern side of the province of Trapani, between the Birgi and Paolini districts in the DOP and IGP area, a stone's throw from the Stagnone Reserve and the Saline di Marsala. From the historic family vineyards we grow: Grillo, Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Perricone and Zibibbo.

The presence of the sea contributes to the creation of soils rich in minerals which give life to unique wines with Sicilian flavors and aromas. They are sandy soils in which the significant presence of limestone influences the organoleptic characteristics of the grapes. The typically warm, sunny and breezy climate is quite favorable for the cultivation of vineyards. The winter rains and the temperature variations of the summer nights allow the grapes to ripen optimally. These conditions prove to be crucial in defining the high sensorial expression of the production.

The Ribelli di Marsala wines are highly pleasant and drinkable, which manifest themselves through tickling freshness, a rainbow of floral aromas and the flavor that the sea breezes give to the grapes.

WHO WE ARE
THE STORY OF A LOVE
The Flavia Rebellious Wines family is a mélange of cultural dimensions that derive from skilled hands and industrious minds passed down through four generations who deeply believe in the values of craftsmanship, native vines and the final quality of a wine that is authentic. The family history is made up of rigor and constancy, since 1860 they have taken care of the land and the plant like a mother does for her children.

The love for wines has its roots in the Trapani area when the great-grandfather Francesco Rallo moved to the Sicilian countryside and began working his first plots of land in the Baiata district. The business was taken over by Grandfather Giacomo, who passed on the passion and love of doing things with the heart to his son Francesco Rallo, who, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, continued to pass it down from father to son the founding values keeping the family tradition high to this day.

THE FOURTH GENERATION
Young and zealous producers, Flavia and Giacomo Rallo represent the fourth generation of the Rallo family from Marsala. Their philosophy is identified in the valorization of the pure essence of wine and its nature, practicing sustainable, organic and non-invasive cultivation and production techniques. Honoring the legacy of their forefather, Flavia and Giacomo want to spread the culture of quality wine by dedicating themselves completely to the creation of native Sicilian wines in which they blend past and present.

NATURAL WINES
FROM THE VINEYARD TO THE CELLAR
The choice to produce organically is an effective choice for the well-being of each individual but also for the planet, the sustainable choice is a direct vote for the health and hope of generations to come. Our main objective is not to achieve high levels of production, but to maintain and increase the levels of organic substance in the soil (organic farming), reducing or completely eliminating the supply of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides to fight parasites (insects, mites, etc.) and pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses). Our organic production method therefore has a dual function: responding to consumer demand for healthy and safe wines; on the other, producing natural wines that contribute to environmental protection, animal welfare and rural development.

HEROIC VITICULTURE
Wines produced by heroic viticulture. Extreme by nature. Born above all limits.

They are heroic wines resulting from the effort, sweat and industriousness of man. Wines produced in geographically inaccessible areas and with treacherous, sometimes impossible climatic conditions, such as those of Etna.

Small-sized vineyards whose preferred cultivation for the vine is the Etna sapling or counter-espalier with spurred cordon pruning, used to defeat heat and strong winds coming from the sea.

The slope of the land exceeding 30% prevents mechanization, consequently the work in the vineyard and the harvesting of the grapes are carried out manually using methods linked to the old winemakers; our grapes are carefully selected and transported in wooden boxes.

In this area we grow Carricante, Nerello Mascalese and Catarratto which enhance the truest identity of Etna wines.

Nerello Mascalese is an indigenous black grape variety, the prince of the Etna area. The plant, which ripens late, gives life to wines of absolute finesse, great aging reds with an intense red colour, in which olfactory sensations of red fruit, aromatic herbs, tobacco and spices predominate, together with a typical pleasant tannicity. On the palate it is striking for its acidity and marked minerality typical of the volcanic terroir. Etna Rosso is born from Nerello Mascalese.
