Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese

"Michele Satta was one of the founders of the Bolgheri DOC, so the estate is no newcomer to the area. That said, Satta’s blend is rare for the region because it includes a bit of Sangiovese, typically about ten percent. Giacomo, Michele’s son who took over running the estate in 2019, believes Sangiovese adds “freshness” to the wines. He explains that most of Bolgheri is inhospitable to Sangiovese, which is why it rarely found in the wines, which are often known as Bordeaux-style blends. A bit further inland where the soil contains more clay and less sand, Sangiovese does well. The lift that I assume comes from Sangiovese makes the 2022 sing. Although the Piastraia is a big wine, it is balanced and not boisterous. Under the readily apparent black fruit qualities lies minerals, spice and other savory counterpoints. Its glossy texture and fine tannins allow immediate enjoyment, though its overall composure indicates a wonderful evolution in its future." -Michael Apstein

The Michele Satta company originated in 1983 at Castagneto Carducci, in the heart of the Bolgheri D.O.C., of which Michele was one of the founders; it is a region inhabited by important families and wine entrepreneurs who have made their mark on the wine production history of Tuscany in the last 30 years.

The estate is family-run, with a now constant size of 25 hectares, and currently produces 150,000 bottles a year, all obtained from its own grapes.

The philosophy of the Michele Satta estate draws its origin from the life of its founder: a boundless, all-inclusive passion for agriculture that he picked up during his initial experience as a laborer on the farm at Castagneto Carducci.

"Wine, on the other hand, is the grape that transforms, it's always that same grape that becomes something else, extraordinarily more evocative, it opens a space in your heart." -Michele Satta

An important difference between Michele Satta and other big names like Ornellaia, Sassicaia or Grattamacco is that the determined and very likeable wine producer in Bolgheri runs the oldest winery that belongs to a winemaker.
