Viura is one of the most cultivated white grapes in La Rioja. For some time now, this native variety, also known as Macabeo, has been attracting all the attention in the D.O. Ca La Rioja and is beginning to compete with the more traditional wines. Reds watch out! Its secret: fermentation and aging in wood, with its lees, achieving a wide range of nuances. This is how Muriel Blanco is made, a wine produced by the Muriel winery (in the Rioja Alavesa) that is fermented and aged in French oak barrels.

Founded in 1926, the Muriel winery is one of the great exponents of the D.O.Ca La Rioja. This winery, run by the Murúa family, cultivates its vineyards in Elciego, one of the best known villages in La Rioja, where the best soils in the region are found. In the case of Muriel Blanco, the grapes were grown right here, on clay-limestone soils that are very poor in organic matter. The grapes are harvested by hand, always looking for the quality and good condition of the grapes. This is very important, as Muriel Blanco undergoes a maceration where the must is in contact with the skin. During this process, which seeks to maximize the varietal aromas and scents, it is essential that the grapes arrive in perfect condition, without any kind of damage or oxidation. After three hours, Muriel Blanco is pressed and the juice is fermented. This process, which is the most important, is carried out in French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks.

Finally, Muriel Blanco ages in French oak barrels before bottling, becoming a tasty wine, full of nuances, that will certainly leave an impression on you.
