"This wine is an incredible introduction to the Blatina grape and the red wines of Herzegovina. The appearance is dark ruby red with a ripe fruity nose, with savory and spiced herb aromatics. The palate is elegant and juicy with fresh plums, violets, forest floor and a touch of salty bitterness on the finish." -Importer Notes
Blatina is very quickly going to become a new fan favorite in the portfolio. It is a grape that creates medium-bodied reds with juicy acidity, distinctive mineral flavors, and tend to be low in alcohol and retain an exceptionally fantastic level of natural acidity for grapes grown in this part of the world. The wines often have very soft, pretty and elegant flavors, and sometimes described as a cross between Sangiovese and Gamay.
The varietal is very unique in that it is a female flowering plant, meaning it needs another variety to pollinate and produce grapes. For this reason, almost all Blatina vineyards are planted with Alicante Bouchet or other local varietals, and then harvested (and often co-fermented!) together as a field blend. Skegro’s Blatina, for example, is done so with Alicante Bouchet and Trnjak (local varietal) with 8-10 days skin maceration in open plastic vats and stainless steel.
