Vineyard Profile

Vineyard in central Chassagne-Montrachet. In the town of Chassagne-Montrachet, one of the roads looks like a scythe. Maltroie is in the middle of this scythe.

The Maltroie name comes from the Medieval Latin word martyretum—a burial place for martyrs. Roman cemeteries were often placed near Roman highways, while cemeteries in the Middle Ages were near churches. Being near a Gallo–Roman highway leads one to believe these place names are derived from Gallo-Roman necropolises, and that a cemetery was once here.

  • Wineyard Area: 1.61 acres/ 0.65 ha
  • Soil: Limestone and gravelly – vines are situated above argovian marlstone
  • Slightly deeper and richer soils than other plots in Maltroie, resulting in wines of  great minerality and length
Harvest Notes
  • Hand harvested
  • Fermented in 10 – 30% new, primarily French François Frère oak barrels using only indigenous yeast
  • Aged 18 months in barrel
  • Bottled without fining or filtering

It’s impossible to discuss Chassagne-Montrachet without mentioning the name Moreau.

For generations, the family has made some of the purest, most thought-
provoking wines of the appellation. The Moreau winemaking roots go back to 1809, when Auguste Moreau built a cellar across from the Champs Gain vineyard, where he owned and farmed a few hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

In the 1930’s, the estate flourished under the direction of Marcel Moreau. Roughly 80% of the Domaine's original vineyard holdings were acquired by Marcel during this time. In the early 1960’s, Bernard Moreau—who was only 14 years old at the time—took over the vineyards and cellar operations. By 1977, the reputation of this great estate had been fully established, and the winery was named Domaine Bernard Moreau. Bernard’s sons, Alex and Benoît, joined the Domaine in the 1990’s, after working at wineries in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.

In 2021, Alex (pictured above) assumed full control of the Domaine and named it Domaine Alex Moreau. Alex’s wife, Martine (pictured above), plays an active and vital role in running the estate, and together, they are writing the next chapter of the family’s esteemed winemaking legacy.
