Winemaking: Old Stones is the "baby sister" to Bergström's Sigrid Chardonnay, made from fresh-fruited, mineral-laden barrels selected to show Oregon Chardonnay at its most charming and elegant. Whole clusters are pressed "champagne-style", long and gently at low pressure, to extract the finest juice. Fermentation uses native yeast when possible, and the wine ferments fully dry and goes through full malolactic fermentation. It ferments and ages on its lees in French oak barrels, 10-15% of them new. Élevage on the lees lasts 18 months in total: 12 months in barrel, then 6 in stainless steel tank.
Vineyards and terroir: The fruit comes from Bergström's own biodynamically farmed vineyards: the Bergström, Le Pré du Col and Silice vineyards in the Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge and Chehalem Mountains appellations of the Willamette Valley. The roughly 25-year-old vines grow in marine sedimentary sands and volcanic basalt clays with south, southeast and southwest exposures, from a varied mix of field clones. In 2022, spring frost sharply reduced yields, but the season turned into a triumphant harvest. It gave Chardonnay with a noble, reductive, saline minerality and succulent natural acidity framing citrus fruit and floral notes, delicious young and long-lived in the cellar.
Family and history: Bergström Wines is a first-generation American family business and one of the most celebrated domaines in the Willamette Valley. Its roots lie in Dr. John Bergström's Swedish heritage and his love for the Pacific Northwest. John and his son Josh founded the winery in 1999. Today Josh and his wife and business partner Caroline have farmed their estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards biodynamically for more than 25 years, across some of the finest appellations in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Bergström believes strongly in the power and promise of Oregon Chardonnay, and 2022 is the sixteenth vintage of Old Stones.
