Winemaking: Sigrid is a selection of the finest barrels of Chardonnay from Bergström's estate vineyards. The hand-harvested fruit is pressed as whole clusters, champagne-style, slowly and gently at low pressure to draw out only the finest juice. Each vineyard is fermented separately with native yeasts where possible, in French oak barrels of which 10 to 15% are new, and the wine goes through full malolactic fermentation. It then spends 18 months on its lees in total: 12 months in barrel and six in stainless steel tank. The Willamette Valley's 2023 vintage swung between record heat and cooler-than-average spells, and gave stone-fruited, mineral-driven Chardonnays with freshness, depth and aging potential.
Vineyards and terroir: The fruit comes entirely from Bergström's own estate vineyards: Bergström Vineyard in the Dundee Hills, Le Pré du Col in Ribbon Ridge and Silice in the Chehalem Mountains, all in the northern Willamette Valley. The soils range from marine sedimentary sands to volcanic basalt clays, the slopes face south, southeast and southwest, and the oldest vines are about 26 years old. The vineyards have been farmed biodynamically since the beginning.
Family and history: John Bergström left a small logging village in Sweden as a teenager to study in Portland, Oregon, and became a renowned obstetrician and gynecologist. His son Josh studied viticulture and enology at the CFPPA in Beaune, where he met Caroline, a Beaune native. John and Josh founded Bergström Wines in 1999, the year Josh and Caroline returned to Oregon to make their first vintage; today the couple run the estate together. The wine is named for Sigrid, John's mother and the family's Swedish grandmother, whose spirit, grace and strength inspired three generations of Bergström children.
