Close74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot
Food pairings: Roast veal, pork or beef, lamb, duck and game, roast chicken, porcini mushrooms, and cheese.
Winemaking: The 2018 was picked from September 17 to October 11 after a season of heavy mildew pressure, which the team fought by the most natural means possible, avoiding excessive copper. It was vinified in oak vats and aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 70% new.
Vineyards and terroir: Brane-Cantenac lies on the Cantenac plateau, on deep Quaternary gravel of the fourth terrace. In 2018 its clay-gravel soils held enough water to carry the vines through the dry summer.
Family: The estate takes its name from Baron Hector de Brane, who renamed it in the 19th century. Léonce Récapet bought it in 1925, and his great-grandson Henri Lurton has run it since 1992. In 2022 Henri passed ownership to his children while continuing to manage the estate, with director Christophe Capdeville.
In the pictures: A photograph of Château Brane-Cantenac, then spelled "Branne", from the 1860s album "Grands Crus Bordelais" (Rijksmuseum, CC0), and an 1838 lithograph of the château by Charles Lallemand (CC0).
