Close53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot
Food pairings: Roast beef, lamb, duck, game, mushroom dishes, and Comté.
Winemaking: The 2020 was hand-picked by a team of 150 pickers from September 11 to 30, with Eric Boissenot consulting. The wine aged for 12 months in Bordeaux barrels, 60% new and the rest one year old, made from certified French oak air-dried for at least three years. It was racked by gravity four times and bottled under inert gas.
Vineyards and terroir: Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from its "beaux cailloux", the beautiful stones of its Günzian gravel and quartz pebbles near the Gironde estuary. La Croix is a selection of plots from the east, centre and west of the Saint-Julien appellation.
Family: Francis Borie took over Ducru-Beaucaillou in 1942, followed by his son Jean-Eugène from 1959 and Jean-Eugène's wife Monique. Their son Bruno-Eugène Borie runs it today and has led a ten-year programme of sustainable replanting in the vineyard.
