Food pairings: Roast beef, lamb, duck, veal, game, braised meats and aged cheeses.
Winemaking: The 2019 was harvested from September 23 to October 4 and vatted for 18 to 23 days. It aged in French oak barrels, 49% new, with Eric Boissenot consulting.
Vineyards and terroir: Saint-Pierre's Cabernet-dominant parcels lie on Günzian gravel over clay and sand, around the château and its park in the heart of the village of Saint-Julien. The vines average about 60 years old. The estate has since converted to organic farming, with 2024 its first certified-organic vintage.
Family: Known as Serançan until 1767, the estate took the name of Baron Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Pierre and was classified a Fourth Growth in 1855. It was later divided among heirs. In 1982 Henri Martin, the founder of Château Gloria, reunited the vineyard, château and winery, and his descendants, the Triaud family, run it today.
In the pictures: A photograph of Château Saint-Pierre from the 1860s album "Grands Crus Bordelais" (Rijksmuseum, CC0), and an 1838 lithograph of the château by Charles Lallemand (CC0).
