Winemaking: The Cabernet Sauvignon harvest ran from mid-September into mid-October 2022, delivering fruit of bright, balanced concentration. The fruit was carefully selected and pressed, and the wine was aged 21 months in French oak, 62% new. The vintage began with more than 20 inches of rain from October to December, followed by a dry winter, a frosty spring with some hail, a warmer summer and a record-breaking September heat wave that kicked harvest into full swing. The winemaking team is led by Sean Thompson, Jessica Koga and Hugh Davies with consulting winemaker Celia Welch.

Vineyards and terroir: Building on the family's experience at its Diamond Mountain estate, this wine draws on top vineyard sites farmed for low yields across Napa Valley: mountain sites in the Mayacamas and Vaca ranges, including Diamond Mountain, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Atlas Peak, and valley sites in Napa Carneros, Coombsville, Oakville, St. Helena and Calistoga. Soils range from volcanic rock and ash to gravelly clay and sandy quartz, and the warm days, cool nights and dry growing season allow optimal ripening.

Family and history: Davies Vineyards comes from the family behind Schramsberg. Jack and Jamie Davies bought and revived the historic Schramsberg estate on Diamond Mountain in 1965, and Jack helped spearhead Napa Valley's Agricultural Preserve in 1968. Their son Hugh Davies, born the month after the family took over the winery, earned a master's degree in enology at UC Davis and led the replanting of the hillside estate to Cabernet Sauvignon and the other red Bordeaux varieties from 1994, creating the J. Davies Cabernet program; he later partnered with North Coast growers to launch Davies Vineyards. The 2022 is the eleventh vintage of the Davies Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
