Scores:
Winemaking: The 2023 spent an average of 14 days on the skins and was then aged 17 months in French oak barrels, the majority new, before bottling. It is made in the Far Niente house style of dark fruit, velvety texture and silky tannins, approachable on release yet built to age.
Vineyards and terroir: This Napa Valley bottling is a multi-vineyard blend, drawing on fruit from Rutherford, Calistoga and St. Helena as well as Far Niente's estate in Oakville.
Family and history: Far Niente was founded in Oakville in 1885 by John Benson. Gil and Beth Nickel began restoring the estate in 1979, and the first modern Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon followed with the 1982 vintage. Today the winery, with its historic stone walls and hillside caves, remains one of Napa Valley's most iconic estates, devoted to Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
