Winemaking: Coach Insignia is Fisher's top Napa Valley Cabernet, made from the finest selected lots of Bordeaux varieties on the family's Calistoga Estate. The 2018 was harvested from October 15th to 22nd, destemmed and double sorted, then fermented as whole berries in small open-top concrete, oak and stainless steel fermenters. Malolactic fermentation took place naturally in barrel, and the wine aged 21 months in French oak barrels (90% new) before bottling in September 2020.
Vineyards and terroir: The Calistoga Estate lies at the foot of the Palisades mountain range at the northern end of the Napa Valley, on an alluvial fan that slopes gently west along Simmons Creek toward the Napa River. Its well-drained soils are remarkably consistent, made up mainly of cobblestones and loam.
Family and history: Fred and Juelle Fisher founded Fisher Vineyards in 1973, clearing forested land on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains for vineyards and building a winery from their own timber. In 1975 the family added the Calistoga estate along Simmons Creek, home to the Coach Insignia, and in 2019 built a second, more modern winery beside those vines. The name honors the family's tradition of craftsmanship, first expressed in the coachwork of 20th-century automobiles under the Body by Fisher name; the first Coach Insignia vintage was 1984. Three second-generation siblings now lead the winery, with Whitney Fisher, who began in the cellar in 1999, overseeing the vineyards and production.
