Winemaking: HdV's flagship white is made by French winemaker Guillaume Boudet, who reports to Aubert de Villaine on all winemaking matters. The approach is minimal intervention, aiming for a pure expression of the vineyard. The 2022 was aged for 18 months in French oak, 20% of it new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. After two very dry years, the 2022 growing season brought mild spring and summer weather, then five days of triple-digit heat in September. That made it one of the quickest harvests on record, and the result was a wine of real balance and freshness.

Vineyards and terroir: All the fruit comes from Hyde Vineyard in the cool Los Carneros district of Napa Valley, one of California's most celebrated Chardonnay sites, whose grapes are sought by many of the state's leading producers. The wine comes from the vineyard's oldest blocks, planted to two genetically distinct Hyde selections: Old Wente and Calera. Old Wente gives a distinctive perfume and, with its tendency to millerandage (small, uneven berries), high acidity. The Calera selection, now known as the Hyde clone, adds minerality and a distinctive stone-fruit character. The vines grow in Haire clay loam with a south-southeast exposure. The vineyard is certified Napa Green and Fish Friendly Farming, and Larry Hyde uses a range of biodynamic and organic practices.

Family and history: Hyde de Villaine brings together the Hyde family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine family of Burgundy. Larry Hyde, from one of California's oldest farming families, worked at Ridge and Joseph Phelps before buying land in Carneros in 1977 to found Hyde Vineyards. Aubert de Villaine, longtime co-director of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and owner of his own Domaine de Villaine, married Larry's cousin Pamela, and the two families joined forces in 2000. Their aim is to capture the true essence of one great vineyard, marrying Carneros fruit with Burgundian restraint.
