Winemaking: The 2022 J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested between September 13th and October 17th and aged 23 months in French oak barrels (53% new) from the coopers Atelier, Damy, Darnajou and Orion before bottling in September 2024. It is made by winemakers JP Pierce, Jessica Koga, Sean Thompson and Hugh Davies with consulting winemaker Celia Welch. The 2022 vintage began with heavy rain in late 2021 and a dry early year; after a frosty spring, some hail and a warm summer, a record-breaking September heat wave set harvest in full swing.

Vineyards and terroir: The estate vineyards are laid out in four isolated pockets at 500 to 1,000 feet on Diamond Mountain, the southernmost vineyards in the Diamond Mountain District AVA. They include the two Schram sections, Napa Valley's first hillside vineyards, planted by Jacob Schram in 1862, the McEachran parcel, first planted in 1878, and the Claes parcel, dating back to 1984. Flanked by the cool canyons of Nash Creek and Ritchie Creek and surrounded by forest, on soils of mostly loam and river wash, the vines ripen late and give richly concentrated fruit at yields of about two tons per acre.

Family and history: Jack and Jamie Davies bought the historic Schramsberg property on Diamond Mountain in 1965 and revived it as one of America's leading sparkling wine houses. Their son Hugh Davies began replanting the estate vineyards to red Bordeaux varieties in 1994, and the first J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2001 vintage, was released in 2004; the wine is named in honor of Jack L. Davies. The 2022 is the twenty-second vintage, the work of two generations of the family.
