Bright and inviting, with fresh cherry, blackberry, raspberry leaf and a hint of bourbon vanilla, then savory notes of graphite, anise and nutmeg on a palate lifted by mountain fruit acidity, finishing with velvety, long, smooth tannins.

Winemaking: A blend of the best that Long Meadow Ranch's mountain and valley-floor estate Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards can offer, the 2018 was matured for 18 months in French oak, half new and half neutral. The growing season began with a wet spring that extended flowering, followed by a cool, mild early summer that allowed gradual ripening and acid development, so the winemakers waited for flavors and berry chemistry to come into balance before a relatively late harvest.
Vineyards and terroir: The wine is estate grown at the Mountain Estate (also known as the Mayacamas Estate), nestled in the Mayacamas Mountains high above the Rutherford Bench, and at the Rutherford Estate, a mineral-rich benchland on the valley floor that was once a riverbed. Long Meadow Ranch employs an integrated, organic farming system in which vineyards, olive orchards, cattle and horses, a flock of egg-laying hens and organic gardens all contribute to the health of the whole; all crops are certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and grown without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Family and history: After the Civil War, a land patent signed by President Ulysses S. Grant granted the property to Civil War veteran E.J. Church, and before Prohibition the ranch thrived with vineyards, apple orchards, olive groves, hay and a goat dairy. Farming fell dormant during Prohibition and the land was swallowed by forest until Ted and Laddie Hall bought it in 1989 and carefully restored it, cutting back the abandoned olive trees and replanting the vineyards and orchards. Today the Hall family, with their son Chris, farms grapes, olives, fruits, vegetables and pasture in three counties, guided by the motto "excellence through responsible farming".
