Winemaking: In a signature of the house style, the wine is blended before barrel aging, in early 2022 for this vintage, so the blend is built on the qualities of each vineyard component before any oak influence. It then aged 24 months in American oak barrels, 50% new, from Silver Oak's own cooperage, The Oak, in Missouri, followed by about 14 months in bottle, and is released at around four years of age, integrated and ready to drink.
Vineyards and terroir: The 2021 harvest, from September 4 to October 8, brought balance and clarity: a dry winter, cool spring and gentle summer let the vines thrive and gave fruit with depth, vibrancy and the hallmark character of Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma County.
Family and history: Silver Oak was founded in 1972 by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer with a single-minded focus on Cabernet Sauvignon aged in American oak, and it remains owned by the Duncan family. Its Alexander Valley Cabernet is made at the winery's Alexander Valley home near Geyserville, where the water tower that appears on the label stands among the vines. Winemaker Dan Kemp crafts the wine.
