Winemaking: Artemis, named after the Greek goddess of the hunt, is the culmination of the winery's hunt for the finest Napa Valley grapes, blended with estate-grown fruit to express the regional character of Napa Valley in the house's signature style of lush fruit balanced by structure and elegance. The 2023 was fermented in stainless steel and aged 14 months in French oak, 57% new. It is a whisper of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot away from pure Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vineyards and terroir: In 2023, one of the coolest Napa Valley growing seasons in more than a decade, the blend drew on cooler, higher sites: Atlas Peak supplied 42% of the grapes, with the Arcadia Vineyard in Coombsville, Battuello Vineyards in St. Helena, Twin Creeks Vineyards, the estate's Elia vineyard in northern Napa and Rancho Chimiles in Wooden Valley. A wet winter, late budbreak and a classic summer of warm days and cool evening sea breezes gave a slow, even ripening.
Family and history: Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was established in 1970 in what became the Stags Leap District, and its 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon famously took first place among the red wines at the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, a milestone for Napa Valley wine. The stag on the label recalls the winery's home beneath the Stags Leap palisades.
