Plump black cherry, baking spice and a savory touch of potting soil and underbrush on the nose. Silky and fresh on the palate, with juicy cherry, a hint of orange peel and garden herbs, a mineral edge and a clean, persistent finish.

100% Pinot Noir

Food pairings: Coq au vin, roast chicken, charcuterie and a cheese board with Comté.

Winemaking: A medium-weight Pinot Noir made without oak, so the fresh fruit and minerality of the site come through clearly.

Vineyards and terroir: Les Clos is a single parcel of clay soil near the Mâconnais village of Bussières, reserved by the Thevenets for Pinot Noir in an area otherwise planted mostly to Chardonnay.

Family and history: Jean-Claude Thevenet took over the family domaine in Pierreclos, at the heart of the Mâconnais, from his father Raymond in 1971 and built it up with vineyards in Pierreclos and the neighbouring villages of Serrières, Prissé, Bussières and Milly-Lamartine. For three generations the family has also run a vine nursery supplying many family domaines in Burgundy and Champagne. Since Jean-Claude's death in 2008, his sons Benjamin, Jonathan and Aurélien have run the domaine under the guidance of their mother, Hélène.

In the pictures: Benjamin, Jonathan and Aurélien Thevenet in the family vineyards; the Thevenet winery in Pierreclos; and the domaine's barrel cellar (photos: Rosenthal Wine Merchant, importer).
