Dark ruby, with aromas of red and black fruits, rose petal and baking spice. Raspberry, pomegranate and juicy red berries meet a crisp coastal freshness and brambly lift; silky and balanced, finishing long with spice, fine tannins and a hint of cedar.

100% Pinot Noir

Food pairings: Roast duck, cedar-plank salmon or salmon teriyaki, mushroom risotto, herb-roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, charcuterie, and dishes with truffle, thyme or cranberry.

Winemaking: The grapes for the 2024 were harvested and sorted by hand and cold-soaked in the cellar. Fermentation took place with wild yeasts in small open-top stainless-steel tanks, with about 25% whole clusters included for aromatic lift and savory spice. The wine was then racked into new, second-use and neutral French oak barrels, including barrels from François Frères and Remond, for malolactic conversion and eleven months of aging.

Vineyards and terroir: The 2024 blends fruit from the cool, fog-influenced Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA (70%) with a selection of declassified barrels from Valravn's Sonoma Coast AVA Marine Layer project (30%). The coastal influence brings crisp freshness and a taut, linear structure to the ripe red and black fruit. Thanks to friendships with vineyard owners and growers built over more than a decade, Valravn has exclusive access to grapes from fantastic vineyards and oversees production hands-on from vineyard to bottle.

Family and history: Valravn is the Sonoma County label of Baron Ziegler, a Minnesota native who began buying Bordeaux futures at 15, built a career in wine retail and importing on the East Coast, and moved to California in 2007. Two years later he co-founded Banshee Wines, whose first wine was a Pinot Noir meant to offer real value in a category usually priced far higher, followed by the import company Valkyrie Selections and the Valravn label. After Banshee was sold, the team kept its grower contracts and built Valravn on them, launching in 2014. Winemaker Rob Fischer, a Napa native who honed his craft at Domaine Carneros, Donum Estate, Ancien and Etude, joined in 2017. The goal: single-vineyard quality Sonoma County wines that are approachable, delicious and table-ready, at prices that punch above their weight.
