Winemaking: Élu, French for "chosen," grew out of winemaker Michael Scholz's and consulting winemaker Michel Rolland's wish to craft each year a red blend that is a seamless, elegant reflection of the estate's red varieties. The fruit was hand-harvested in the cool morning hours, sorted first by cluster and then berry by berry, and rested on the skins before a warm fermentation with gentle cap management and an extended maceration. Eighteen percent of the berries were fermented in small concrete tanks and fourteen percent in French oak barrels for added complexity, and the wine then matured for 19 months in French oak, 61% new. The dry, warm 2021 season gave a light crop of high-quality fruit with opulent aromatics and great persistence.
Vineyards and terroir: Élu comes entirely from St. Supéry's own sustainably farmed, Napa Green certified estate vineyards: Dollarhide, a former cattle and horse ranch high in the northeastern hills of Napa Valley with steep, rolling slopes between 600 and 1,100 feet, seven lakes and many different soils, where warm days and cool nights are accentuated by the elevation; and the Rutherford Estate around the winery on the Rutherford Bench, whose deep, well-drained alluvial soils are known for fine-grained "Rutherford dust" tannins.
Family and history: St. Supéry was founded in 1982 by the French Skalli family, who brought their European winegrowing experience to Napa Valley and bought the untamed Dollarhide Ranch, with the vision of a French-style château making 100% estate grown wines. The winery stands on Highway 29 in Rutherford. Since 2015 the estate has been owned by CHANEL, and CEO Emma Swain, who has led St. Supéry since 2009, has steered it through a transformation in quality alongside winemaker Michael Scholz.
