Winemaking: The Mascot is crafted from the younger vines of the Harlan family's estates: Harlan Estate, BOND and Promontory. In 2021 a relatively dry winter brought just over nine inches of rain from January through June, and the team reduced yields by pruning at the very start of the season so the vines could focus their resources. Warmth in May coincided with flowering, and picking began on August 23rd and lasted 26 days. The family describes the 2021 as supple and poised, with smooth, sheer tannins and a distinctly classic structure that is surprisingly approachable for a young Napa Valley red.
Vineyards and terroir: The fruit comes from young vines on the family's hillside properties on the western side of the Napa Valley, including Harlan Estate in the western hills of Oakville and Promontory, also in Oakville, as well as the BOND vineyards. These parcels share the same meticulous farming, low yields and exacting standards as the parent estates, so each vintage offers a glimpse of their development before the vines mature.
Family and history: The Mascot began as an experiment by Will Harlan, son of Harlan Estate founder Bill Harlan, who convinced the family and winemaking team to spare a few barrels made from their younger vines to explore a blend of his own. For its first years, before it had a name or a label, it was a wine shared with friends and family at the family table; the 2008 vintage was the first official release. The name and the bull terrier on the label were inspired by "Prince," the unofficial mascot of The Bar Sinister, a story by Richard Harding Davis. Cory Empting is the winemaker.
